Savannah way from Normanton

we set off about Lunch time, after being briefed at the information centre in Normanton about the state of the roads on the Savannah way heading west, had been told at a coupe of places that our 4wd ute should tackle any water crossing with the deepest being knee or top of the wheel high.

With all the names of the trouble spot rivers, and alt routes, should we not be able to cross any river, we refuelled both the ute and ourselves and headed west.

The first point of interest was a major stop that explores Burke and Wills had blazed trees etc all those years ago. a couple were there when we arrived and we were soon talking about travel etc. About 30 min passed before we headed off, we thought they were going to Normanton as they had their caravan there, but they also headed west and stopped at a large river crossing, where we once again said goodbye.

The road had been sealed most of the way to that point, but it soon was dust and ruts etc.

The last part of the run to Burketown was sealed for 70ks which was a real surprise.

As we drove into Burketown we noticed a large mound of rock with water coming from the top, it was a artisan bore and the water was very very hot. about 100 m away, we counted about 40 add kangaroos enjoying the green grasses that this bore water was creating..

At the Information office the man stuck his head out the door to look at the 4wd height, before telling the same story knee deep high waterwe decided that we should stay tthe night so went to get a site at the caravan park, but it was a dirty looking place and they wantted $32 for a non powered site, We decided to push on after a look around the town and ended up at a road house 30Klm away.
