Normanton to Cairns
Back at Nofter our coastal visit we decided to push on towards Carins.
After a few hours driving we decided ti call it a day, more Kangaroos on the road and one, dingo.
We came across open area next to the Gilbert river with three or four campers set up for the night. During or stay we had the company of several Kangaroos and some strange noises in the night. The next Day we were refueling and one of the other campers came in to refuel and he said that the strange noises were wild pigs.
At the same garage a pom came in to refuel with a nice new little hire camper van, he came up with his map to find out what was interesting to see in the area, as he said he wanted local knowledge. I explained we were not locals ,but had been in the area about five years ago and the main point of interest was the tube caves. I noticed that he was on his own and when I said to him are you travelling on your own, he came straight back at me saying he was and that he was not Gay.
When we got to Mount Surprise all traffic on the road must go through a under body wash. we drove through and it sprayed us all over at a very high pressure.
We then wound through the mountains on through Atherton then down to Cairns.
We found the caravan park we stayed at a few years ago, got our site then speed back in to the town area to find the RACQ, as we needed maps and Info on the roads to the top of cape York.
we were told that it was a long weekend (labour Day) and that the cape road was still close and the next up date would be the Tuesday the 8th May.
We stayed in Carins for two nights then decided we would push on to Cook Town and find out what was open as Cook town was about 85 Klm past the turn off to head up the cape.
At cook town we stayed in a caravan park and in the morning we went to find out more about when the road would be open etc, but no one could give us any details as to when the road was going to open.
