On to Normanton

at Cloncurry we turned north again on the Matilda Hwy and as the sun started to go down we started to see Kangaroos all over the place with one at least 10 metres from the road, next thing it was right in front of us, we missed, but that was the warning to call it a day.

Also saw some very large snakes along the same stretch of road. at about 105 k's south of the Burke and wills road house we found a nice rest area with other campers set up for the night.

After we were set up 3 more came roaring in for the night. Not long after they arrived. the chain saw started and they had a roaring fire going for the night. The sun set was fantastic that`night.

we were first packed up and on the way in the morning and at the Burke and Wills road house I had just finished filling up and the three late arrivals came roaring in.

I had cleared the road of Kangaroos for them as once again they were every where on the road just waiting to be killed.

A very large man came out of the road house and got into a massive road train and took off in the same direction we were heading, I was thinking how the hell am I going to get past him, as sections of the road were just one car width wide, but, we never saw him again.

The road north was getting very un kept but although very narrow it was sealed all the way to Normanton

we arrived at Normanton just before lunch and soon discovered that once you have seen the big Croc and the railway station ( no train it was out) that their was not much else to see.

It was 74 K's to Karumba so we headed out to the gulf country, lots of water everywhere and plenty of water birds. On arrival the place was a hive of activity with hundreds of 4wds parked near the boat ramp with empty boat trailers attached. Later when we got to Cairns we found out that it was a long weekend in Queensland which explained all the oncoming traffic we had encounted. Lots of Barra here and plenty of people to reel them in.
