After 7 hours on the train from Ella, we decided that a 8 klm, tuk tuk ride to our hotel in Kandy would get us there a lot quicker.
The Tuk Tuk driver had a whole new plan for us which included not taking us to our hotel, but, into the main area of kandy to show us a view point of that nights parade and the parade route. The event was due to start in 7 hours and already every inch of foot path along the route was taken.
He took us the back way in through a alley to the first floor balcony that was set up with a row of chairs he was selling each position for about $22 us. we had read that chairs cost about 3 times more so decided that if we could get two chairs in the best position to take photos from we best buy them. He then took us to our hotel and came again to pick us up and deliver about 30 min before the event was due to start .Other chairs had also been built up behind the front row that went well back into the shop. When we went back he took us to our position and kept disappearing and coming back with people. We had people from Holland and a young couple from Russia were seated next to us and another western woman.
The parade took hours to get to us and when it did it took over three hours to pass. I took a lot of photos, and as we all talked between each other we found out that they had paid 500 rp each less. when I complained to the tuk tuk man he said you got the best position which was true. The parade had over 3,500 performers and close to 100 Elephants in it. It was a event that every one should see in their life time, it was just fantastic.
After the event we walked back to the hotel around the lake and were about 400 meters away from the hotel when he turns up with his tuk tuk telling us to get in to make sure we got home safely.
Have posted a few general photos below
