Sri Lanka #8

Moving North

The next location as we headed north is a town called Ella.

Ella is set in the mountains and is a very busy place with holiday makers and tourist from all over the world. we came across whole families here on holidays from Europe.

We stayed in Ella for two nights in the cool mountain air, our room was in a private house next to follies inn that is listed in the LP book. the Follies inn people send people next door when their place is full which is what happened to us and also our young safari friends.

The couple who own the house made sure we were well looked after, and when we told them we would like to stay one more night you could see the joy all over their face.

The lady was 41 and a really nice person, she cooked us breakfast, and wanted us to eat other meals, but , without a menu it was a little hard to decide what she had or to have. having said that rice, curry and tea would have been available for sure.

Ella was the place that the young couple and us parted, they were heading to the east coast to go surfing and we were heading north to the festival in Kandy. we exchanged email address and a promise to keep in contact.

Our stay in Ella gave us a chance to rest up, we did head out to see the local points of interest, but, a lot of people go there for mountain walking in the cool air. It was a little unusual to not have a fan in the room blowing humid air around, which had Teresa complaining that our washing was just not drying.

We decided to get the train from Ella to kandy by train. Teresa went to the train station to buy tickets the night prior to our departure, but, was told you could only buy them in the morning just before departure the train left. The train departed at 715 am so we were up early to walk the 2 klm to the station as not single tuk tuk was in sight at 545am. A cue was already at the station ticket office so we waited until tickets were being sold. 2nd and 3rd class tickets only so having tried 3rd class in China we decided on 2nd class.

Other tourists were also catching the train and we were all told to wait up the platform to get on the front of the train. on arrival of the train we all ended up in the first carriage, but un be known to us it was first class, we found out later that fist class tickets can be purchased up to the day before, any how we were sent back out side on the platform and as we got off the train started moving off, lucky for us one of the staff in the next carriage saw we were trying to get back on and he pulled a leaver that stopped the train we got on the next carriage and lucky for us were got a seat as we walked trough the train to the next carriage again.

The distance we were travelling was only about 260 klm, the train took 7 hours and travelled across the top of the mountains, tea was growing every where and the views were fantastic.

A woman and her two children were with us in the seats her boy was 13 and the girl 8 they were travelling through to Colombo. we soon became friends and both the children really enjoyed our company during the 7 hours we were with them. We played games pulled faces at each other did different types of waves to people as the train passed them to see if they would wave pack the same way etc. we also shared food, biscuits etc. We had a nice pkt of choc biscuits that Teresa passed to a woman for a baby to have one, but the pkt did not come back, but, the joy we got from the baby sucking on and enjoying our biscuits was priceless.

The train was crammed packed the whole way and we were so lucky that we got a seat , as people were standing up all the way well over 7 hours.

At a station out of Kandy we had to change trains, but all the tuk tuck were waiting so after getting prices from them we decided it would be a lot quicker that getting another train.

on a climb to Small Adams Peak came across this dog which was near
dead.  Teresa gave him a biscuit but, he did not know what is was.
she got him to eat one of her bananas
